Not everyone is apt to give you advice

Be careful about who you go to for advice or feedback. Some people are limited, and their advice or feedback will only limit you. Some people don’t want to see you thrive and be in a better place than them, so their advice or feedback is to counsel you in the wrong direction or quietly plant a seed of doubt in your mind. And some people simply don’t grasp what you’re saying or building, so what they offer lacks depth or any real sign they’ve thought things through.

But there’s another layer to this. Even well-meaning people can give you the wrong advice, not out of jealousy or ignorance, but because they’re speaking from their own fears, their own experiences, and their own comfort zones. What didn’t work for them, they’ll tell you won’t work for you. What feels risky to them, they’ll tell you to avoid. If you’re not careful, you can end up inheriting limitations that were never yours to begin with.

Not all advice is equal. Some of it is rooted in experience, clarity, and intention. Some of it is noise dressed up as wisdom. Your job is to know the difference.

Pay attention to results, to mindset, to whether someone is speaking from a place of growth or fear. Are they building, learning, evolving, or are they stuck, cynical, and comfortable where they are? That matters more than how confident they sound.

Also, not every opinion deserves a place in your decision-making process. You don’t need a committee for your life. Too many voices can blur your vision and slow you down. Sometimes the best move is to get quiet, reflect, and trust your own judgment.

Therefore, be mindful of who you go to for advice or feedback. Be careful about who you ask. Assess well. Be selective. The person who can give you advice about how to eat healthy may not be the person who can give you advice about how to run a business. Choose wisely.

And most importantly, don’t outsource your conviction. Advice should inform you, not override you. At the end of the day, you’re the one who has to live with the outcome. Trust that.
