Why is it uncomfortable to do nothing?
In a world, where it’s rewarded to be doing something all the time, to be productive, it can be so uncomfortable to do nothing. It’s uncomfortable to be still, to do nothing but rest, to spend time alone to relax and explore our inner world. However, we can learn how to do nothing.
The society we live in is distracting us from exploring our inner world. Why?
Because, if we explore our inner world, we will discover that we have all that we need within and that we don’t need the next best gadget or cool item to fulfill us. We will not need anything else anymore and we’ll be content with what is essential to us. We will realize that we could live with less and be happy with the simplest things.
Be comfortable with being uncomfortable being still. You will discover yourself, the magic of life, your depth, and that of the world. Sit with the discomfort of doing nothing and resting. Your body, mind, and soul need rest in order to continue functioning efficiently.
It is uncomfortable to do nothing and be still because we would have to face our shadow self, the shit we don’t wanna look at and face. Feel that discomfort and it will soon pass. Facing yourself and working through it will unleash your unique and authentic self. There is so much beauty in that.
How to do nothing
So, how do we do nothing? Do we really do nothing during those moments? Great question!
How to do nothing may seem complicated but it really isn’t. And, it doesn’t mean we do nothing. It’s about taking it easy, not trying to achieve anything in particular, relaxing into being in the present moment, letting our thoughts pass, observing our surroundings, feeling our breath… simply being.
Doing nothing is about stopping the chase of constant stimulation and letting yourself be bored, be still and in silence, or be alone to re-center yourself and listen to what is going on within. It can look like sitting on a bench, watching what is going on around you, letting yourself feel whatever emotion comes up, letting your thoughts pass, and just observing them, smelling, hearing what is around you.
Here is an example of how I like to spend some time doing nothing: I sit on my balcony, especially when it is sunny outside, with a cup of tea or coffee. And, I just listen to and watch what is happening around me. My thoughts come and go about anything, without judging them. And, I let myself feel, whatever feeling comes up.
I hope this inspires you to start doing nothing from time to time, to reconnect with the present moment and yourself.
